ARCHITECTURALPAINT

Architectural decorative finishes are key to contextualising your structure within its cultural milieu. By combining a scholarly approach and the latest analytical techniques, Calibre’s experienced architectural paint researchers (APR) provide meaningful and practical results.

Rigorous architectural paint research is an increasingly common prerequisite for conservation management plans. To allow a better understanding of the evolution of historic decorative schemes, Calibre analyses paint stratigraphy, paint types and the colours used to articulate architectural elements. The process includes:

  • documentary research (plans, accounts, sketches, photographs, reports)

  • the decorative phases and significant historic schemes (sometimes dated)

  • the composition and structure of individual layers (paint type, colour and techniques of application)

  • paint analysis (pigments and binding media)

  • the condition of paint stratigraphy and causes of deterioration/ failure (salts, coatings, compatibility)
